Plastic Surgery - Facial Flap - Advice Following Your Operation:

Wound:

Your wound may have a small drain which will be removed at the dressing clinic at Kingston General Hospital 2 days after your operation, an appointment will be arranged for you.

DO NOT BEND OR STOOP UNTIL THE STITCHES HAVE BEEN REMOVED.

Stitches:

The doctor may use stitches that will dissolve on their own, or stitches which may have to be removed. Stitch removal is not painful. Dissolvable stitches can take up to 3 weeks to dissolve. Other stitches will be removed at the outpatients department. These type of stitches are usually removed a week to 10 days after your operation.

Dressings:

Any dressing should be kept clean and dry until removed.

Bleeding:

If your wound bleeds, sit up straight and apply gentle pressure for bout 5 minutes. If bleeding persists please telephone the contact number for advice (see below)

Pain:

Local anaesthetic is often injected during the operation, when this wears off in a few hours, any pain or discomfort may be relieved by simple pain killers such as Paracetamol. Please remember to follow the recommended dosage on the container. If pain persists or becomes severe please call the contact number for advice (see below)

Swelling:

Mild swelling after your operation can be expected and may last a few days. Please call the contact number if swelling increases or is associated with redness or pain.
