Repair of Hydrocele - Advice for parents

What is a Hydrocele?

It is a swelling caused by an accumulation of fluid surrounding the testicle.

The surgical treatment is relatively simple. After the operation the stitches will be dissolvable and do not need removing.

Postoperative Care:

1. It is best to avoid full baths for about a week.

2. Your child should be as active as he feels.

3. Calpol (Paracetamol) will help to reduce your child's discomfort. Please follow the recommended dosage, and remember it usually takes approximately 30 minutes to become effective.

Follow-up Appointment:

Will be approximately 3 weeks in the Paediatric Outpatient Department.

School Children:

If your child is at school he will need approximately one week off.

Should you need to consult your GP (Family Doctor) with a problem related to your operation within 3 weeks of surgery we would appreciate you contacting the Day Surgery Unit. This will enable us to monitor your progress. Please ask to speak to the paediatric nurse (Tel: 01482 675066)
